Pandemonium as 4 passengers arriving from the US collapse at the airport due to heat....

There was pandemonium at the Muritala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos, yesterday evening when four passengers who arrived the city from Atlanta in the United States of America, collapsed due to excessive heat at the arrival hall of the airport terminal.
According to Leadership Newspaper, the passengers, who had arrived in Nigeria aboard Delta Airline from US, were waiting for baggage reclaim but the 4  who had just arrived from the United States of America where the temperature is much cooler, got overwhelmed by the heat in the arrival area and collapsed.
A source close to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) told LEADERSHIP Weekend that the cooling system at the airport was not working when the incident happened and that it might be due to the current remodelling of the airport.
It was learnt that two of the passengers were rushed to an undisclosed hospital in an ambulance belonging to the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN)
In his reaction to the development, the general manager, public affairs of FAAN, Yakubu Dati, said the situation was exaggerated by online reports.
Another FAAN official contacted who preferred anonymity said the unhealthy situation at the arrival hall of the airport was not new to most air travellers who had had to contend with it as they passed through immigration and baggage collection.
“For those coming from Europe it is like coming from an extremely cold environment to an extremely hot environment and passengers have to sweat it out as they go through immigration formalities and then through the tortuous collection of their in luggage,” he said.

Magnus Carlsen: Norway's chess superstar

The Norwegian chess prodigy - one of Time Magazine's 100 most influential people. 

As a prodigal genius and fashion model, newly-crowned world chess champion Magnus Carlsen has already lit up the game and has now added the world crown to his list of achievements.

The Norwegian world number one earned his maiden world title on Friday when he defeated reigning champion Viswanathan Anand of India in the 12-game challenge match in Chennai.
Carlsen, who turns 23 on November 30, missed out on becoming the youngest world champion by a few weeks, a record set by his one-time coach and Russian legend Garry Kasparov in 1985.
Kasparov, the undisputed world champion from 1985 to 1993, described Carlsen as a Harry Potter-type "super-talent" who is the first Westerner to hold the world title since America's Bobby Fischer in 1975.
"Magnus rocketed to the top of the rating list almost without pause, displaying a consistency and tenacity rare in a young player to accompany his limitless talent," Kasparov wrote in the Business Insider earlier this month.
Carlsen has dominated the World Chess Federation's list of top players in the last three years, with a top rating of 2,870 points that broke Kasparov's best of 2,851 points achieved in 1999.
"Magnus is a very different player and his approach is refreshingly new," American chess grandmaster and former Olympic champion Susan Polgar told AFP, with his aggressive tactics on show throughout the bouts with Anand.
Introduced to chess by his father, Carlsen showed off his genius as a toddler.
At the age of two, the self-taught prodigy knew by heart all the car brands and later memorised the long list of all Norway's municipalities, with their flags and administrative centres.
Sibling rivalry with one of his older sisters sparked his interest in chess, which soon led to his first competition at the age of eight.
The breakthrough came in 2004, when the 13-year-old defeated Russian former world champion Anatoly Karpov, forced Kasparov to a draw and became a

The dishevelled and serious looking teenager was once described by the Washington Post as the "Mozart of chess".
A fashion model in his spare time, Carlsen made it to the Time magazine list of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2013.
He also won the Chess Oscars, awarded by Russian chess magazine '64' to the world's best player, for four consecutive years from 2009 to 2012.
Carlsen admits two weaknesses: not being a good winner or a good loser.
"You cannot be a number one in the world and be a good loser," he told reporters in Oslo last month. "I'm not a good winner either. I try not to rub it in to my opponents. Unless they deserve it, of course."
Worried he may fall sick in India during the title bout, Carlsen and his team visited Chennai in August to check out the facilities in the southern coastal city.
By the end of the three-day visit, Carlsen's team had forced organisers to insert an "illness" clause in the contract by which a player can take a two-day break if he fell sick.
All-India Chess Federation secretary V. Hariharan said it was the first time an illness clause had been included for a world championship match.
Despite his overwhelming dominance over the last few years, Carlsen warned rivals his best was yet to come.
"I still have so many ways to improve," he said. "In every tournament, in almost every game, I find that I make mistakes.
"I definitely have some kind of talent but I don't know exactly what it consists of."

Norway world's best for internet after Sweden

Norway comes second only to web-savvy Sweden in the way it uses the internet to improve lives, according to a ranking by a foundation headed by Tim Berners-Lee, the founder of the World Wide Web.

The World Wide Web foundation commended the country for it's "top scoring performance on measures of freedom and openness," in a report released in London on Friday.  

 

Other Nordic countries also made the top ten, with Denmark making 6th place, Finland 7th place and Iceland 8th place. 

 

The report warned, however that Sweden's close cooperation with UK and the USA intelligence agencies could put its leadership position under threat, due to "excessive state surveillance." 

 

"A growing tide of surveillance and censorship now threatens the future of democracy," Berners-Lee said at the launch of  Web Index 2013 ranking. "Bold steps are needed now to protect our fundamental rights to privacy and freedom of opinion and association online.”

MKO Abiola's Wife Doyin Arrested For Fraud.

Former Managing Director of the defunct Concord Newspapers, Dr. Doyin Abiola has been arraigned before the Federal High Court, Lagos, for fraud.

A statement signed by Police Public Relations Officer DSP Ngozi Isintume-Agu said that the Financial Malpractices Investigation Unit (FMIU) of Special Fraud Unit (SFU) said that between 2006 and 2008, as a Director of the Integrated Microfinance Bank, Dr. Abiola granted to herself without collateral and approval from the Management, the sum of N26,611,246.48.

Dr. Abiola, of 42/46 Moshood Abiola Crescent, Ikeja, Lagos, and wife of the late Chief Moshood Abiola, is one of four Managing Directors or Directors of Integrated Microfinance Bank (IMFB) located at 6A Adeniyi Jones Avenue, Ikeja, who were arrested and charged by the SFU.

The others are Akinteye Simon Ademola, Dr. Jerry Orimovuohoma and Oladapo Bello. 

The SFU said the four officials of IMFB unauthorized credit facilities to the tune of N327,566,000 to themselves and other related companies without collateral and that the loans are still outstanding.  In the forensic investigation conducted by FMIU of SFU, the Directors were found wanting in the discharge of their duties while on the Board of Integrated Microfinance Bank (IMFB).

· Ademola of Plot 7, block 90, Mobolaji Ogunde Crescent, Magodo GRA Phase 2, Lagos converted the sum of N131.176 million to his personal use without approval.

· Orimovuohoma of 129B Oba Ladejobi Street, GRA, Ikeja granted unauthorized credit facility to the tune of N29,200,000.00 to himself without collateral.

· Bello of 23/25 Ijora Causeway, Ijora, Lagos recklessly granted the sum of N3,200,000.00 to himself without collateral.

“The bank liquidity was greatly affected with the sum the directors took,” the statement said.    The case comes up at the Federal High Court on December 10,2013.

Nigerian teenager arrested in Italy for killing 60 year old woman

A 19 year old Nigerian homeless man has been arrested in Italy for killing a 60 year old woman. Nwajiobi Donald (pictured above) strangled Caterina Susca with a bag over her head in her home in Bari, a southern Italian coastal city on Monday November 11th. Unknown to him, a neighbor took his pictures as he left Susca’s house after the murder. Donald confessed to the murder on November 14th after he was arrested by police who confronted him with numerous pieces of incriminating evidence collected in the hours immediately following the crime.

According to reports, the victim was found semi-naked with a plastic bag over her head and her skull crushed in. Donald said he killed the woman in self defense after she attacked him with a pair of scissors in her home. Donald, who is homeless, claimed he met the victim on the morning of the incident and asked her for food; the lady asked him to follow her home with a promise to give him something to eat only to attack him but investigators believe Donald was trying to steal from the woman and when caught in the act, attacked and suffocated her with a plastic bag after beating her up. Police say some money and a phone was stolen from the deceased.

Donald is currently remanded in prison after a judge refused him bail...

Gunmen attack Aviation Minister Stella Oduah's car - Police

The FCT Police Command on Monday in Abuja confirmed that gunmen fired shots at the car of the Minister of Aviation, Ms Stella Oduah in Abuja. The spokesperson of the command, Altine Daniel, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the incident occurred at about 10 p.m. on Friday.

She added that the minister was not in the car when the incident took place.

Ms. Daniel, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, however, said that the incident was reported to the police on Monday at about 5:30 p.m. According to her, some metal objects were found in the vehicle which do not look like the conventional bullet. “The objects will be subjected to ballistic test,” she said. Also confirming the shooting, the Special Adviser to the minister, Joe Obi, said that the attack took place at the Ministers’ Hill, Maitama in Abuja.
“Fortunately, the minister was not in the car at the time the attack took place.

Adaobi Obih's suspected killer Ryan Klug caught in Texas

The prime suspect in the murder of 26 year old Nigerian, Adaobi. M. Obih, has been apprehended in Texas. Ryan Allen Klug was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals near Galveston, Texas on Saturday Nov. 23rd, four days after his roommate Adaobi was found dead in the flat they shared in Indiana.

A full time test engineer at Cummins Inc., Adaobi only began to pursue her PHD before she was murdered. Family sources said she leased the apartment on her own and Klug was her tenant who paid rent to her. They also said Ada interviewed a large number of people before deciding to lease a room to Klug. Only for him to end up killing her.

Ada's employees were alerted after she missed two days of work. They went to her flat to see what was going on with her only to find her lifeless body in her apartment. Ada had been stabbed multiple times and her throat cut.

Man wanted for murder in death of Columbus woman

COLUMBUS – Columbus police obtained an arrest warrant for a man wanted for murder. They’re looking for 36-year-old Ryan Allen Klug, who they say is now the prime suspect in the murder of 26-year-old Adaobi M. Obih, who was found dead Tuesday in an apartment. Police initially said Klug was a “person of interest” in the case. Columbus police don’t think Klug is still in the area and said multiple law enforcement agencies were looking for him. Police were alerted to Obih’s death after she missed work Monday and Tuesday without notifying anyone. Concerned coworkers contacted her apartment complex to ask about her. Police also contacted the property manager to request a welfare check, according to the arrest affidavit. A maintenance worked went to check on the woman and said, “It’s not good, there is blood everywhere” after going to Obih’s apartment. A neighbor said he noticed that the door to Obih’s garage spot was open and had been open for at least 24 hours. Klug, who police described as Obih’s roommate, parked his vehicle there. The maintenance worker told police there were no signs of forced entry at the apartment and that only two people would’ve had keys: Obih and Klug. The maintenance worker told police he found Obih with a “large amount of blood around her head” and said it appeared clear that she was dead. Police talked to Obih’s boyfriend, who revealed that he’d texted and called her multiple times but never heard back. The last message he received from her was at 12:17 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17. When she failed to respond, he went to her apartment, saw her car in the parking lot and knocked on the door. Obih didn’t answer. A neighbor who lives in the apartment below Obih’s said it sounded like someone was moving furniture during Sunday afternoon. “It went on for more than three minutes,” the neighbor said, adding that it happened shortly before tornado warnings went off for Sunday’s storms. Police said Klug had texted a pastor asking him to call. When the pastor did so, Klug answered and said he couldn’t talk at the time. Further investigation found that Obih had been stabbed multiple times and her throat cut. A blood trail went from the woman’s bedroom to Klug’s, and police said it appeared “the assailant attempted to clean up in the bathroom area belonging to Mr. Klug.” They also found a bloody towel in Klug’s sink. Police located a plastic bag containing a bloody sock and other clothes stained with blood, including blue jeans, boxers and a shirt. Police said the “amount of blood on these items was significant.” Police found a trail of small blood drops leading from the apartment to the garage where Klug parked his vehicle. His 2008 silver Subaru Legacy was not parked in the garage. Klug works for the Indiana Department of Transportation, and police contacted his supervisor, who told them Klug’s behavior had been “off” lately. He sent a text message Sunday saying, “sick tomorrow, then vacation next two weeks.” His supervisor said the message was out of character and also violated the department’s vacation time policy. Klug did not return texts or phone calls, his supervisor said. He didn’t show up at work Monday or Tuesday. Klug’s stepmother and father said they hadn’t heard from him for several days. His brother told police he’d spoken with Klug about two weeks ago. Klug wanted to get back with a girl he’d dated. The relationship ended about a year ago. The police at Idimu, Lagos,have arrested the wife of a pastor, Mrs. Angela Uzoma, for pouring hot water on her sister. She was arraigned before the Ejigbo Magistrates’ Court for injuring the teenager. The 28-year old housewife who is also the women’s leader in her husband’s ministry at Shasha allegedly poured hot water on Chidinma Chukwu, causing her serious injury. The incident happened at their residence at Ifelodun Street Orisunmbare, Shasha, Lagos State, western Nigeria. The pastor’s wife accused the 14-year old Chidinma of selling only few pawpaws on the fateful day. Angela, according to the police investigating officer (IPO), had warned Chidinma to ensure that she did not come back home without selling all the pawpaws packed in her tray for sale that day. Unfortunately, she did not sell everything and Angela became angry, accusing her of being too playful. She tried to hide the incident by refusing to take her to a hospital. Instead, she arranged with a nurse who was treating her at home. The matter came into the open when a samaritan heard of it and reported to the police at Idimu. Angela was promptly arrested. Angela revealed at the police station that she did not intentionally pour water on her, adding that she brought her from the village to train her and she was hawking pawpaw to assist the family to feed. she blamed it on the devil and said she wanted to settle out of court. Her husband, Pastor Paul Uzoma, described the incident as unfortunate and blamed his wife for going too far When she was arraigned in court on Tuesday,she pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum. She was ordered to be remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri, Apapa when she couldn’t fulfill the conditions attached to her bail. The matter has been adjourned till 12 December, 2013. Poor child

Artist nails his own testicles to the ground in front of horrified tourists

A man was arrested after stripping naked and nailing his own testicles to the ground in broad daylight and in full view of tourists at one of the world’s most visited landmarks.

Self-styled performance artist Pyotr Pavlensky received treatment at a clinic before being taken to a police station following the incident, which he said was a protest against Russia’s ‘police state’.

He shocked visitors in Moscow’s Red Square by hammering a nail through his scrotum into cobblestones outside Lenin’s Mausoleum, on the day Russia marked its Police Day national holiday.

At least one person filmed Mr Pavlensky during the protest before police put a blanket on him and removed him from the floor.

In a statement posted on the grani.ru website prior to the demonstration, Mr Pavlensky had written: ‘A naked artist, looking at his balls nailed to the Kremlin pavement, is a metaphor for the apathy, political indifference, and fatalism of contemporary Russian society.’

The artist has put his body on the line for previous high-profile protests.

After two members of the Pussy Riot punk protest band were jailed for singing inside Moscow’s main cathedral in 2011 he sewed his lips together, and he also wrapped his naked body in barbed wire outside a government building in St Petersburg.

A powerful typhoon ripped through the Philippines last Friday, killing more than 1200 people, and leaving many more injured with millions displaced from their homes.

The typhoon, named Haiyan, ranks among the world’s strongest with winds of up to 235mph and gusts of 170mph which left a trail of destruction. It triggered major landslides, knocked out power and communications and caused catastrophic widespread damage.

Hundreds of homes have been flattened and scores of streets flooded. Victims’ dead bodies littered the streets.

The storm is now moving towards mainland Asian and is expected to reach Vietnam coastal areas on Sunday morning while humanitarian experts estimate the number of casualties will rise considerably.
