Policewoman Committed Suicide After Texting Husband Message Meant For Her Lover

A policewoman committed suicide after writing a text to a male colleague thanking him for a 'wonderful' date - but accidentally sent it to her husband, an inquest heard.
PC Gail Crocker, 46, met a fellow officer while her husband Peter, 49, was away from their home near St Austell, Cornwall, on a business trip in London.
Later that evening the mother of two typed a message on her mobile saying: 'Thank you for a wonderful evening. Only wish we could do this more often'.

But Mrs Crocker sent it to her husband of 30 years by mistake, an inquest in Truro was told.
He came home and she admitted to having a 'one-off' rendezvous with a male colleague but insisted it had never happened before.
The couple rowed, and the next day Mrs Crocker called in sick from work and drove to a lane two-and-a-half miles away from her home in the village of St Stephen.  She took an overdose and was later found dead in her car on 15 June.

Mr Crocker, of St Stephen, Cornwall, told the inquest his wife had begged him for forgiveness when he got back from his trip.
He said: 'I got out [of the car] and she was in floods of tears saying she was sorry. She told me it was a one-off and she had never done it before.

Mr Crocker told the hearing they rowed the following morning, saying: 'She went on and on again. My work phone rang. I was so angry I slammed it into the ground.

Gail Crocker, 46, committed suicide after sending a text meant for a man she had dated to her husband
After going to the supermarket to buy a replacement phone, Mr Crocker arrived home later that day to find his wife and her car had gone.
Mr Crocker contacted her sergeant at Bodmin Police Station who told him she had called in sick for her shift that afternoon.
He said: 'I didn't sleep at all. I didn't hear from Gail during the night.'
The following morning David Rendell and his wife, close friends of the Crockers, spotted Mrs Crocker's car in the car park at Lanjeth, a nearby village, and called her husband.

Mr Crocker discovered his wife's body in the boot next to an empty bottle of tablets, which the pathologist said caused her death, and suicide notes written to him and daughters Chloe, 22 and Gemma, 25.
Mrs Crocker, who met her husband in Plymouth when she was 15 and he was 17, first trained as a PCSO in Truro in 2003 and became a police constable in 2007.
Mr Crocker added in his statement: 'She was a people person - she would speak to anyone about anything. Being a PCSO was her perfect job.

'She was my life.  We had plans.  Nothing was worth her taking her life.  I'm lost without her.'
  - Paul Crocker, 49

'She was my life. We had plans. Nothing was worth her taking her life. I'm lost without her.'
The unnamed colleague with whom Mrs Crocker spent the evening was not required to give evidence or named at the inquest.
Returning a verdict of suicide, Coroner for Cornwall Emma Carlyon told the hearing she was satisfied that Mrs Crocker's death resulted from a deliberate act to take her own life.
At the time of her death colleagues paid tribute to the 'excellent' police officer who was based in Truro and later Bodmin.
Sector inspector Robin Hogg said: 'I have known Gail for several years and will always remember her as an excellent officer with a bright, happy and positive disposition.'
'Gail leaves a husband and two daughters who miss her deeply and are very proud of the role she carried out in the community.'

Doctor Arrested For Detaining New mothers who cannot pay their bills

A hospital where nursing mothers and their babies were illegally detained in dehumanising conditions for several months over non-payment of hospital bills has been uncovered in Lagos.
The hospital was uncovered by officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, WAPA, in collaboration with the Office of the Public Defender, after a tip off.
The three-storey medical centre, Afolabi Hospital, is located at 78, Oworo Road, Oworonsoki in Bariga Local Council Development Area of Lagos, western Nigeria.

Seven nursing mothers and their babies were rescued from the hospital when it was raided by the officials on Monday.
Its owner, Dr. Olajide Afolabi was arrested by the Task Force and later released on bail after writing a statement.
P.M.NEWS gathered that the victims were detained until their  families were able to pay their debts.
The nursing mothers and their babies, it was learnt, were detained for as long as seven months or more in a dehumanising condition at the hospital.
It was also gathered that pregnant women were usually delivered at the hospital through caesarian operation for a minimum of N150, 000 or more depending on their cases.
The mothers were kept in a dingy room and made to sleep on bare floor while their babies were laid on spring beds without mattresses.
Among the victims is a woman (names withheld) who gave birth to one of her twins in the bus while on the way to the hospital. The second baby was delivered at the hospital.
It was gathered that the one delivered at the hospital died immediately while the one delivered inside the bus survived and yet she was detained for not paying her delivery charges.
Investigations revealed further that families of those detained were allowed to bring food to them from time to time.

According to Mrs. Alaba Fadairo, Director, Child’s Development, WAPA, “we got an information that a hospital was keeping new born babies and their parents for failing to meet up with the bills they incurred after delivery.
“When we got wind of the ugly development, we swung into action and in the course of our investigation, we found out that it was true that they were incarcerated for not paying their bills.
“After giving birth, both parents and their children were not allowed to see what life outside the hospital looks like. This is barbaric. The area that is of utmost concern to us is the new babies being put on spring beds without mattresses.
“Before we embarked on our fact find mission, we got a video which showed the babies on spring beds without mattresses but mere wrappers. This is against the fundamental human rights of the children. We realised that some of the people have even paid part of their debts, yet they were being held for as long as six, seven months.
“Infact, when we got to the hospital, the doctor was very violent. He made calls and we were besieged by hoodlums who surrounded us. We escaped after a reinforcement came from the task force,” she said.
According to Mrs. Rotimi Omotola, Director, Office of the Public Defender, ”we learnt there are still more children in the hospital. Their mothers were incarcerated within a particular area in the hospital without adequate medical attention.
“We have rescued them and they are in protective custody. You can’t dehumanise people to such an extent just because they are owing you. It is a violation of their fundamental human rights.
“This is happening because people don’t know their rights or where to go when such happened. Again, people don’t want to be their brothers keeper anymore, else this kind of development ought to have been reported earlier.
“Criminal charges will be filed against the owner of the hospital if he is found guilty in the course of our investigation. All his certificates too will be verified if truly he’s a qualified medical doctor,” she said.
Speaking with P.M NEWS at the premises of the task force, Dr. Afolabi said most of the patients were not his original patients but rushed to his hospital from other clinics, adding that the longest period of time his debtor patients spent in his hospital is four months.
He said they were being held in the hospital because they refused to pay their respective charges in due time as agreed, saying he is not running a charity organisation.
“I’m a qualified medical doctor and I have my certificates. None of the babies were made to sleep on bare spring beds. There were mattresses on them. If you see the babies and their mothers, they were very healthy. I even treated them when they were sick.
“They were many owing different amounts of money, ranging from N70,000 upward. There was a particular one that was rushed to my hospital from another clinic. When they came, I told them she will be operated and they agreed. I billed them N150,000 and the husband signed.
“Three weeks after, they couldn’t pay and I offered them one of the vacant rooms in the hospital pending when they will pay my money. I even asked them to come and make an agreement on how they will pay their debt, even if it will be N5,000 per month.
“When the church members came to my hospital, offering to pay the money, I even offered them discount on the debt. But I was surprised when officials of WAPA invaded my hospital claiming that I am running a detention camp,” he said.

Man Gets Caught Manufacturing Fake Cough Syrup In His Toilet

A trader, Chijioke Nwagu, has been apprehended by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control for allegedly manufacturing and selling counterfeit drugs.

According to NAFDAC, the suspect, who lives on Elemijaye Street, Ajamgbadi area of Lagos State, carries out the illegal manufacture in the toilet of his two-bedroom flat where he mixes chemicals in a
200-litre drum.

Chijioke had been caught after one of his boys, Uzodinma Odoemena, was caught with fake drugs following an intelligence report and surveillance mounted at Alafia, Orile Iganmu, where Nwagu supplies counterfeit Tutolin with codeine cough syrup that he manufactures.

Odoemena then led investigators to Nwagu’s house where it was discovered that Nwagu carries out the illegal manufacture in the toilet of his house by pouring different locally-manufactured cough syrup of reputable companies into 200 litres drum and after mixing them, he then dispenses them into empty bottles and labels it as Tutolin with codeine cough syrup.

The Director-General of the agency, Dr. Paul Orhii said:
In his house, we found:
four cartons of Uniplex cough syrup,
four rolls of Bancof cough expectorant,
50 bottles of Dr Meyers’ Coflin Cough Linctus,
1,500 bottles of Exiplon Epectorant,
two cartons of Halfan tablet,
200 litres drum,
one carton of Dr Nando double 77 keys to power and empty containers of these drugs as well.”

PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspect’s wife, Jane, who was at the house, was also arrested by the agency.
But the suspect explained that he did not plan on selling the goods in Nigeria, saying they were meant for export to Benin Republic.
He said:
“I bought the packaging material of Tutolin with codeine from one Chibuike in China and the product was meant to be supplied to Benin Republic. In the course of my business, I met one Chisom Onwudinjo, who came to my house to see how I manufacture my goods in my house.
“He subsequently agreed to be my distributor and he also accepted that we will not sell the product here in Nigeria.”

Another suspect, Ugbo Collins, who resides in Onitsha, Anambra State, was arrested for importing over 1,000 cartons of fake drugs worth over N54m into the country.
The NAFDAC boss said,
The agency intercepted a 20 feet container imported by NGOD’s Success Ventures. The importer fraudulently gave its name as Lamek’s Global Links Limited on the consignment bill purported to have originated from Pakistan, but investigations revealed the real name of the importer and that the goods came from China.
Investigations revealed that Collins from Onitsha contacted one Larry Amah to clear the consignment for him. Amah in turn, sub-contracted the job to one Okey, an employee of Ocean Star Shipping Company.
The container was impounded and counterfeit pharmaceuticals worth N54, 702, 500 were discovered in the container. Some of them include 348 cartons of Strepsil Tablets; 34 cartons of Augmentin Suspension, eight cartons of Disprin Tablet, 99 cartons of Septran Syrup and 20 cartons of Bonjela.
Others include 126 cartons of CaC-1000 Tablets, 92 cartons of Cicatrin powder, four cartons of Mydriacyl Eye Drop, seven cartons of Glucophage Tablet, 27 cartons of Nystatin, 11 cartons of Apmiclox Suspension, 246 cartons of Dettol Antiseptic Liquid, 22 cartons of Optalidon Tablet, 28 cartons of Encephabol Liquid and 23 cartons of V-tab.”
The suspect, however, said he did not know that the products were fake, adding that he had even been administering the drugs to his children.
“I have four children and they all use the drugs. I even give my seven-month-old baby. I was told that the goods were from Pakistan, I did not know they were from China,” he said.
Orhii urged members of the public to continue to give the agency useful information that could lead to the arrest of drug counterfeiters.

Senate seeks 7yrs jail term for social media critics

The Senate has reached an advanced stage to pass a bill that seeks seven years jail term for social media critics found guilty of inciting the public against the government.
The proposed legislation which has scaled second reading in the upper legislative chamber is also proposing a stiffer punishment for internet fraudsters and scammers in Nigeria as those convicted will face a seven years imprisonment.
The joint Senate Committees on Judiciary, Human Rights and legal matters, Drugs, Narcotics and Financial Crimes led by Senator Umaru Dahiru (PDP, Sokoto), yesterday organised a one day public hearing on the bill for an act to provide for the prohibition and punishment for electronic fraud and crime in all electronic transactions in Nigeria.
Section 13 subsection 3 of the bill proposes that: “Anyone who intentionally propagates false information that could threaten the security of the country or that is capable of inciting the general public against the government through electronic message shall be guilty of an offense and upon conviction shall be sentenced to seven years imprisonment or N5 million (fine).”
Declaring open the public hearing Senate President David Mark who was represented by the deputy minority whip, Senator Abu Ibrahim (APC, Katsina), said electronic fraudsters pose great danger to the country which must be tackled to attract foreign investment.
The committee chairman Senator Umaru Dahiru (PDP, Sokoto) said electronic fraud was posing serious threat to world economies and Nigeria being a developing economy should enact appropriate laws to deal with the challenges.

Norway produces first ever halal reindeer meat

Norway produces first ever halal reindeer meat
Reindeer in northern Norway

A specialist abattoir in northern Norway has slaughtered the country's first ever halal reindeer meat, with a view to selling it to top-end restaurants as far afield as Dubai.
Harry Dyrstad last week slaughtered 100 animals according to halal rules, inviting members of the Islamic Council to accompany his mobile slaughterhouse out to the herds surrounding his small meat-processing plant in Steinkjer, north of Trondheim.

"We had the idea one and a half years ago," Dyrstad told The Local. "We spoke to someone who had some contacts in Dubai, and he said that if you want to sell reindeer meat, it has to be halal, so we had to try."

Dyrstad also aims to cure some of the meat as a halal alternative to ham, which he hopes to sell to muslims in Norway.

"We got some information that we could produce some ham from the reindeer, so the children can have ham on their bread," he said.

Mehtab Afsar, General Secretary of the Islamic Council of Norway and one of those who oversaw the slaughter, said he was looking forward to tasting reindeer for the first time.

"This is a brand new halal product that Muslims have not had access to before. I am told that this is a very good meat, but I've never tasted it myself," he told the Adresseavisen newspaper.

Dyrstad's company, Vilteksperten, may however face competition from Russian reindeer producers.

In 2010, the Yamal Reindeer Company, based in Russia's Arctic Yamal Nenets region, announced it had produced 1000 cans of halal reindeer meat, which the region's government planned to offer at a Russian investment conference in Qatar.

That is a very good move.
